My Teaching Philosophy & Proven Student Outcomes

Since 2013, I have helped students from JC, IP, IB, and O-Level backgrounds rebuild confidence in Mathematics and achieve strong improvements in grades.
As of 2019, 38 students improved from fail to A, and many more strengthened their grades from mid-tier (C/B) to A or B.

My teaching method is personalised, strategic, and deeply student-centred — focusing on understanding each learner’s mindset, knowledge gaps, and study habits.

Benefits My Students Gain From My Tuition

1. Strong, measurable improvement in grades

Since 2019, 38 students have improved from fail to A.
Many others moved from mid-level grades to A or B.

2. Access to a comprehensive library of materials

Students receive:

  • Prelim papers (all major JCs)

  • Ten-Year Series

  • Revision packages

  • Fully worked solutions

  • Helpsheets, summaries, and curated practice questions

3. Highly efficient lessons with intensive Q&A

Lessons are driven by student questions.
I address misunderstandings immediately, then reinforce concepts with targeted revision.
No time is wasted on topics they already know — every session results in real learning.

Bonus Benefits

4. Supportive, active student community

Students get access to a chat group where they can:

  • Ask questions

  • Exchange notes

  • Share learning materials

  • Connect with peers from various JCs

5. Lifetime alumni network.

After graduation, my students join an alumni community where seniors share:

  • NS tips

  • University advice

  • Career guidance

  • Life insights and opportunities

6. Career & personal development support

With my NUS MBA background, I guide students on education pathways, choosing university courses, early career planning, and business/career insights.
This support continues long after they graduate.

How I teach: My Tutoring Approach

1. Helping Students With Weak Foundations (Fail → A)

Many students come to me when they are struggling.
I identify gaps, strengthen fundamentals, use simple examples, then increase difficulty.
Confidence is rebuilt through structured practice and reinforcement.

2. Helping Strong Students With Selected Topics

Some students are strong but weak in a few topics.
I target those topics, rebuild fundamentals, then provide challenging questions.
Once their issues are resolved, they may stop tuition — I still check in through text to ensure progress.

3. Strengthen Understanding Through Guided Questioning

When students bring questions, I first explain the underlying concepts and provide hints that match their level of understanding, allowing them to work through the problem independently. Once they grasp the idea, I challenge them with similar questions to verify their understanding. This immediate testing reinforces the concept and builds their confidence.

Before ending the session, I ensure that every question they have is fully addressed, so they leave the lesson clear and assured.

4. Addressing weakness in selected topics

Some students are generally strong in Math but struggle with certain topics because they lack foundational understanding. For these students, I take the time to rebuild the basics of the chapter using simple explanations and straightforward examples. This helps them realise that the topic is not as difficult as they initially thought.

Once their foundations are secure, I guide them through progressively more challenging questions. This gradual increase in difficulty helps them gain mastery and confidence in the topic.

There are also students who are self-motivated and face issues with only a few areas. I do not require such students to continue tuition unnecessarily — once their weaknesses are resolved, they are free to stop. I still check in with them regularly through text messages to ensure they continue to progress well.

5. Help students tune in to the optimal mental state for learning

A student's mental state determines if learning is effective. If they are physically, mentally, or emotionally disturbed, it will be hard for them to pay attention, think clearly, or remember what they are learning.

When I sensed that a student is affected by some issues, I take the initiative to address them. For example, by providing them with food and water, adjusting the room temperature with air conditioning, etcetera. Or discussing with them about the things that they have doubt about or are troubling them.

6. My Responsibility as a Tutor

I believe that a tutor’s responsibility extends far beyond the lesson itself. Most parents want to understand how their children are progressing, so I provide regular updates and communicate any observations that may help guide the student’s improvement.

Learning is more than achieving good exam results. Students should also develop stronger problem-solving skills, confidence, cognitive abilities, and a growth mindset — qualities that will benefit them long after they leave school.

Because of this, I pay close attention to each student’s character, stage of cognitive development, study habits, and mindset. I offer guidance that is objective, well-informed, and tailored to their individual needs, supporting them in both their academic and personal growth.
