One up or one down our competitors
By One up or One down we are talking about whether we should work on having more or less features than our competitors.
The guiding principle should be whether the consumers are willing to pay for the additional features, in other words, will additional feature bring in additional revenue or result in significant competitive advantage.
There is a problem with having additional features. Unless the additional feature is something users badly wanted, it may make your product more complicated to use and more costly to make, your engineers will have more maintenance work to do and your customer service will have more problems to fix. Overall, it could lead you to become less effective than your competitor.
Suggest to focus on the key value of your product or service and do them really well, only increase a feature when it is demanded by many customers. Always ask your customers before you add a new feature.
